E-learning Challenge #141 is about creating a short demo to teach Instructional Designers about Bloom's Taxonomy.
Good Instructional Designers know that Bloom's Taxonomy offers a key foundation to many modern teaching philosophies. It's a theory that has been developed over sixty years ago by Dr. Benjamin Bloom, a famous educational psychologist, and it's still being used today.
In their original work, Bloom and a committee of educators identified three domains of learning: cognitive (mental), affective (emotional), and psychomotor (physical). However, when people think of Bloom's Taxonomy, they most likely think only of the cognitive domain.
Bloom's Taxonomy explains that there are 6 different levels of learning within the cognitive domain, from basic knowledge-based approaches to more in-depth creating learning tasks. Each level is associated with a set of verbs that describe what learners should be capable of doing. These levels are:
Knowledge : define, repeat, record, list
Comprehension: translate, restate, describe, explain, identify
Application: interpret, apply, use, demonstrate, illustrate, schedule
Analysis: compare, debate, question, appraise
Evaluation: judge, evaluate, score, choose, measure
Create: imagine, compose, propose, plan, organize
These levels can also be thought of as degrees of difficulties. That is, the first ones must normally be mastered before the next one can take place.
For this ELH Challenge I decided to look at Bloom's theory in more detail and present Instructional Designers with a Bloom's Taxonomy Mind Map. This Mind Map helps one choose the right activities for each of the 6 cognitive levels described above. The Java script code incorporated will let the users print out the Mind Map for future reference.
